Diary of Dr. Brodie Strachan Herndon [manuscript], 1853-1862, 1878.

The concluding pages of Dr. Herndon's diary describe life in Fredericksburg, Va., during the Civil War through October 1, 1862. He mentions life behind the lines, war refugees, escaping slaves, women's war work, news of family and friends and religious readings and meditations. Many of the entries are devoted to the last illness and death of a Nannie Gordon. Thee are brief mentions of Union Generals Marsena Patrick, Chester Arthur (June 4, 1862), and George A. McCall. Of note are references to both fair treatment and mistreatment by Union officers and men and arrests of local men as hostages for Union men held by Confederates.
